Understanding the Texas LTC Proficiency Test

The Texas LTC (License to Carry) Proficiency Test is a crucial requirement for individuals seeking to obtain a license to carry a handgun in the state of Texas. This test evaluates an applicant's proficiency in handling a handgun and ensures that they have the necessary skills to carry a firearm safely in public per the DPS regulations.

To successfully pass the Texas LTC Proficiency Test, applicants must demonstrate their ability to handle a handgun responsibly and accurately. The test typically includes shooting exercises that assess the individual's marksmanship, knowledge of gun safety rules, and ability to follow proper procedures when carrying a handgun.

Shooting Skills

One of the key components of the Texas LTC Proficiency Test is the shooting accuracy portion. Applicants are required to hit designated targets with a certain level of precision to demonstrate their shooting skills. It is essential for test-takers to practice regularly and familiarize themselves with their firearm to ensure they can meet the accuracy requirements of the test.

In addition to shooting accuracy, the Texas LTC Proficiency Test also evaluates applicants on their knowledge of gun safety rules and their ability to apply these rules in a real-world scenario. This includes demonstrating safe handling practices, understanding when it is appropriate to use a firearm, and knowing how to store a handgun securely when not in use.

Course of Fire

The shooter will shoot 50 rounds total at the B27 target. Any hit on the silhouette scores points. All hits inside the 8 ring are 5 points, hits on the 7 ring are 4 points, and other hits on the silhouette are 3 points. The total points required to pass is 175 out of a 250 perfect score.

Starting at the 3 yard distance in a standing, low ready position, you will fire 1 shot in 2 seconds 5 times; 2 shots in 3 seconds 5 times, 5 shots in 10 seconds, once. Use this time to see where your grouping is and slightly make tweaks to get your grouping as tight as possible. As the target is moved further out, your grouping will spread and you are more likely to lose points. Moving the target to 7 yards the sequence is 5 shots in 10 seconds once, 1 shot in 3 seconds 5 times, 2 shots in 4 seconds once, 3 shots in 6 seconds once, 5 shots in 15 seconds once. If all your shot placements are within the 8 ring line, you have 200 points, enough points to pass. For the final round, move the target to 15 yards. You will shoot 2 shots in 6 seconds once, 3 shots in 9 seconds once and 5 shots in 15 seconds once.

Overall, the Texas LTC Proficiency Test is designed to ensure that individuals who are granted a license to carry a handgun in Texas have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry a firearm safely and responsibly. By preparing adequately for the test and demonstrating competence in shooting accuracy and gun safety, applicants can increase their chances of passing the test and obtaining their LTC license.
